NG9-1-1 GIS Obstacles Tackled by GeoComm's Proven Process

GeoComm developed the proven Assess, Improve, Maintain approach to be an effective and streamline process agencies can use for preparing their GIS data for an NG9-1-1 environment.  Because the NG9-1-1 services utilized in this approach are simple and straightforward, they are easily adaptable for jurisdictions of all sizes including local, regional, or statewide.

The State of South Dakota began formally transitioning to a GIS process and solution that was tailored to meet the rigors demands of NG9-1-1 in 2014.  By approaching their transition utilizing the Assess, Improve, and Maintain process, the State of South Dakota has greatly improved the quality of their GIS data and has an established Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) plan to maintain it.

“It was a big undertaking to get to the point of having a statewide GIS dataset that could be used for call routing in NG9-1-1; however, we knew we could get there with GeoComm through a collaborative and coordinated effort.  In addition, to the essential public safety role this GIS dataset plays, local and state offices will also benefit from having a single seamless, gapless GIS dataset,” Shawnie Rechtenbaugh, Deputy Secretary and State 9-1-1 Coordinator, South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

Shawnie Rechtenbaugh was also a guest presenter for GeoComm’s recent webinar titled Working Together to Achieve Public Safety Grade GIS Data.  A recording of the webinar can be found HERE
