Intrado Inc., a leading provider of 9-1-1 technology solutions, has teamed with the Miami-Dade Police Department to begin the transition of one of the largest emergency communications centers in the United States to the next-generation of 9-1-1.
With a population of more than 2.5 million residents, Miami-Dade is the eighth-most populous county in the nation. The Miami-Dade public safety answering point (PSAP) now features 102 call-taking positions and fields an average of approximately 6,500 9-1-1 calls a day and more than 2.4 million calls per year.
“We’re extremely pleased that the Miami-Dade Police Department looked to Intrado for the technological advancements it needed to maintain its standard of excellence and more effectively support its citizens,” said Kerri Fielder, vice president and general manager of Intrado’s Call Handling Division. “We’re honored to have had the opportunity to support the emergency communications needs of Miami-Dade County for more than 15 years, and look forward to continuing to help their 9-1-1 professionals save lives and protect their community.”
The Miami-Dade 9-1-1 center is comprised of two facilities seven miles apart interconnected via fiber-optic cable. Together, these two facilities are the primary PSAP serving Miami-Dade County and can also function as a backup PSAP for the City of Miami and as a regional backup for surrounding counties.
Positron® call processing equipment from Intrado, in combination with highly skilled call-taking professionals, has helped the Miami-Dade Police Department speed its response times for emergency calls from 11 seconds five years ago to less than one second now. Moreover, the transition to a fully integrated IP platform provides the department with cost and operational efficiencies, increased reliability and greater redundancy.
The Miami-Dade Police Department deployed Positron® VIPER™ next-generation 9-1-1 controllers and Positron Power 911® workstations for call handling. The new call processing system provides the Miami-Dade PSAP with greater control and flexibility for both landline and wireless calls, and a feature-rich work environment designed for the next-generation of 9-1-1.
