PowerPhone and Verbal Judo Institute Announce Partnership to Bring Tactical Communications to 9-1-1

New course offering – Dispatch Judo™: Verbal Defense & Influence for Emergency Communications – is now being scheduled across the United States

PowerPhone, Inc., a leading provider of 9-1-1 call handling training and technology, has jumped in the ring with an exclusive partnership with the Verbal Judo Institute to deliver a groundbreaking new continuing education course – Dispatch Judo™: Verbal Defense & Influence for Emergency Communications. For the first time ever, the concepts of Verbal Judo, an internationally recognized method of defusing potentially violent situations, will be brought to emergency communications.

The Verbal Judo Institute was founded in 1983 by Dr. George Thompson (“Doc Rhino”), Ph.D., to teach police, corrections and security professionals how to defuse conflict and redirect behavior with words. Today, the Verbal Judo Institute has trained more than one million individuals and is required training in numerous states. Now PowerPhone has signed an agreement for the exclusive rights to bring the renowned Verbal Judo defense and influence tactics in a custom-designed course to public safety communications call-takers and dispatchers.

Over the course of two eight-hour days, PowerPhone students will be trained in the art of Dispatch Judo in an exciting hands-on training format structured specifically to promote an interactive, experimental and learner-centered approach, using scenario-based instruction to build on the knowledge and experience of participants.

“Our program will not rely on a traditional lecture format,” said Chris Salafia, president and CEO of PowerPhone. “Our training techniques will focus on the how. Students will learn by doing, and the outcome will be certification as Dispatch Judo Operatives, skilled at using the power of their voice to redirect behavior, generate voluntary compliance, keep all parties safe, and maintain respect and professionalism at all times.”

Taught by PowerPhone’s internationally recognized instructor corps, students will be trained to take responsibility for and manage their individual communication style and technique. They will learn how to manage verbal resistance and de-escalate confrontation through the use of effective verbal commands. Emphasizing the ethical components of intervention to change behavior, students will come away knowing how to maintain control of a given situation to get the outcome they desire.

“The core of Verbal Judo is about redirecting behavior with words,” Salafia said. “Bringing this philosophy to emergency communications is a perfect fit for 9-1-1 because the dispatcher’s voice is their only weapon. Just like with physical Judo, dispatchers can learn to take their opponent’s strength, in this case the caller’s often extreme emotions and erratic behaviors, and use that energy in their favor to control the situation and adapt to ever-changing circumstances.”

Dr. Thompson, the President and Founder of the Verbal Judo Institute, advocates in his book, Verbal Judo: The Gentle Art of Persuasion, that individuals know how to communicate and not just hope for the best. Thompson’s tactical communications techniques teach how to become consciously competent in the use of words. He writes that being an unconscious competent can be dangerous.

“Communication is an art in itself,” Dr. Thompson said. “I have developed a systematic way to train individuals to speak effectively – to speak with assurance and ease, especially in a pressure situation. Depending on verbal instincts is not enough in emergency communications. Dispatch Judo will systematically teach our country’s dispatchers to use their voices as their most powerful and effective weapon for conquering an emergency situation.”
