Wayne County Sheriff's Office Presents Esri Based Crime Mapping Tools to CJIN in North Carolina
The Wayne County, North Carolina Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) recently presented their Esri based GIS tools at the Criminal Justice Information Network (CJIN) Board Meeting in Raleigh, North Carolina. WCSO was asked to present on the crime analysis and public crime mapping tools that they are utilizing. WCSO currently utilizes GeoBlade Crimes from Geographic Technologies Group (GTG) for internal crime analysis and MapNimbus for providing crime incident information to its citizens.
WCSO allows citizens to view information about crimes that have occurred in their community. “MapNimbus has proved to be very useful not only for the citizens, but also for WCSO. Since MapNimbus is hosted in the cloud, cross-jurisdictional data viewing is now possible. If I have a rash of break-ins along the county line, I can see if a neighboring county is having the same issue in that area. I can then make contact with the sheriff’s office in that county and work with them to solve the case,” states Det. Lt. Harris.
Citizens can search for a location by address or by name. They also have the ability to view pie charts, bar charts, and tabular information about the crimes in their neighborhood. Automatic email notifications can be sent to citizens, which subscribe, to get updates about crimes that happen within a pre-defined buffer of an entered address.
