Send Word Now, the leading worldwide innovator of critical communications technologies, announced today that it will provide emergency notification services to New York Road Runners (NYRR) during the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 2, 2014. The event marks the fifth year for Send Word Now to supply its award-winning Alerting Service to the group, assisting in providing for the safety and security of marathoners, spectators, sponsors and others along the 26.2-mile race.

Known for being the world's premier community running organization, New York Road Runners' mission is to help and inspire people through running. Over the past 55+ years, the organization has grown from a local running club to a global champion of the running movement, promoting numerous world-class events. The TCS New York City Marathon, the biggest and most popular marathon of all, stretches across five boroughs, attracts over 50,000 runners from around the world, and carries a prize purse totaling a guaranteed $705,000.

As with previous marathons, and in light of the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, there are a multitude of visible security measures in place, as well as a number of behind-the-scenes security elements. Among them is Send Word Now's Alerting Service, recognized by Gartner as a "Leader" in its most recent Magic Quadrant for U.S. emergency/mass notification services, and named "Notification System of the Year" by Disaster Recovery Institute International (DRII).

Send Word Now, which is used by more than 1,800 public and private sector organizations worldwide, provides fast, effective and multimodal alerting during critical events, such as inclement weather and security threats. Notifications are communicated via voice and text, and recipient feedback is collected using the solution's powerful Get Word Back feature. Common uses include emergency response team mobilization, shelter-in-place alerting and evacuations.

"The safety of runners, spectators, volunteers, and staff throughout the course of the event has always been of highest priority," said Peter Ciaccia, Chief Production Office of New York Road Runners and Technical Director of the TCS New York City Marathon. "Our goal is to ensure that we are implementing the needed safety and security measures, while causing minimal impact on everyone's race-week experience."
