Burlington County Special Services School Improves Emergency Response with Whaleback Managed Services

Adds 9-1-1 Capabilities to Unified Communications Systems to Enable First Responders to go Directly to Emergency Location

Whaleback Managed Services, the leader in managed unified communications services, today announced that Burlington County Special Services School  (BCSSS) has added Whaleback’s 9-1-1 features to its CrystalBlue Unified Communications Service to assist first responders in emergency situations.

BCSSS is a public school that educates over 1000 students with special needs. Because of the student’s medical needs, the school often needs to call emergency services several times a week. The campus has five buildings including a large building with a dozen points of entry making it difficult for emergency officials to know where to go when called. Prior to installing the Whaleback service, first responders would be confused about where the emergency was happening and how they could get to it quickly.  Valuable time was wasted because the first responders needed to go to the front office to find out where to go instead of heading directly  to the emergency.

Whaleback’s CrystalBlue Unified Communications Services send location information to the PSAP (Public Service Answering Point) including street address, building and specific room numbers to enable emergency responders to go directly to the emergency location faster and easier.  Simultaneously as the call is placed, a 9-1-1 call notification is sent via email and/or text to internal emergency response teams allowing the internal team to initiate action to save time.

“Because of the special needs of our students, we need to treat every situation as an emergency. We have to get them the help they need and if it has to come from outside of the school then we do that,” said Ryan Van Laeys, Technology Facilitator, Burlington County Special Services School District. “We pride ourselves on having a great staff, but there are times we need to call outside assistance. With the Whaleback 9-1-1 feature, we can direct emergency personal to the exact entry closest to where the 9-1-1 call was placed. Our children receive the help they need faster which makes our schools safer, so parents and students can feel confident that they will receive the help they need when they need it.”

Whaleback’s 9-1-1 capabilities include:

  • Per phone location designation specific to individual rooms, offices, buildings, and floors for every phone location,
  • Phone differentiation when using shared extensions on multiple phones,
  • Directed Public Service Answering Point call return to the calling phone,
  • Internal 9-1-1 call notification to response teams,
  • 9-1-1 for off-site phones with local and out of area location designations.

CrystalBlue Unified Communications Services gives customers a feature-rich, high quality, enterprise-wide communications system without the expense or headache of installing and managing an on-premise PBX. Its features can be accessed anywhere, anytime from the Internet, mobile network or public telecommunications network. CrystalBlue integrates business-class telephony features, high-definition voice, network services, IP desk phones, messaging, collaboration, mobility, service guarantees, and redundancy with the simplicity of a cloud-based service and the quality and reliability of an enterprise system.
