Firefighters Travel to Long Island for Hurricane Sandy Relief Project
Author: Mitchell Brown, www.smokeisshowing.ca
Between December 14 and 17, Canadian photographer Mitchell Brown joined 19 firefighters from Tennessee, North Carolina, Ohio, New York and Maryland to lend a hand in Breezy Point, New York, helping rebuild homes damaged by Hurricane Sandy.
The project was organized by the FF Steven Coakley Foundation, a non-profit foundation organized after 9/11 to provide educational scholarships, donate funds and/or equipment to local emergency services to increase the safety of the public and first responders, and hold an annual memorial weekend to honor Firefighter Steven Coakley, FDNY Engine 217 & others lost on 9/11. The Coakley Foundation partnered with The Steven Siller Tunnel to Towers Run Charlotte, an organization formed in honor of FDNY Squad 1 firefighter Steven Siller, also lost on 9/11, which holds an annual race on the 9/11 anniversary in honor of those fallen.
The December trip was the second one made by what’s being called Task Force 17 into New York to help out those affected by Hurricane Sandy. On this second trip, the team brought up tools and volunteer personnel to assist in demolition work of uninhabitable homes in New York’s Breezy Point neighborhood in Queens, located on the western end of the Rockaway peninsula.
The out-of-state volunteers worked under the two local volunteer organizations during their time in Breezy Point, Operation Breezy Pump & Gut (OBPG), which is leading the neighborhood rebuilding effort, and another 9/11-prompted group, Friends of Firefighters.
Each morning, the team would break up into groups and head out to homes that needed demolition work. Floors and drywall were ripped up and removed from the homes. On this trip they focused on some half a dozen homes in Breezy Point, Staten Island and Lindenhurst.
