New civic landmark emphasizes functionality, community access

The City of Alexandria (VA) recently opened a new four-story police headquarters, designed to consolidate operations from three buildings into an efficient, centralized location. At the November dedication, the facility was called “an iconic building” by Mayor Bill Euille, and a “modern, world-class facility” by Acting City Manager Bruce Johnson. The headquarters was designed by Dewberry in association with architecture, engineering firm HDR.

The new building accommodates 500 law enforcement and emergency communications personnel. Plans emphasized security, functionality, and streamlined operations, while encouraging community access and use. Public meeting space is available on the first level, adjacent to the atrium lobby. The lower level houses the Patrol Operations Bureau, with interview rooms, report writing areas, lockers, and showers. The second level accommodates an advanced criminal investigations lab, secure property and evidence storage, and administrative offices. The third floor features a new emergency communications center that consolidates the communications functions of the city’s police and fire departments.

The headquarters is designed to LEED®-Gold certification standards. Dewberry led architectural design services through schematic design for the base building, and provided complete design services for the lobby and public spaces. Dewberry also served as the civil engineering consultant. HDR served as architect-of-record and provided mechanical/electrical and structural engineering services. Landscape architecture was provided by Rhodeside & Harwell. The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company served as the general contractor.
