Fresno PD Unveils Its Newly Upgraded Dispatch Center

Based on a story by Connie Tran posted at yourcentralvalley.com on June 28, 2017

The Fresno Police Department unveiled its newly remodeled 9-1-1 call center this week. The upgraded dispatch facility, located in the basement of police headquarters, features a phalanx of new state-of-the-art telecommunications equipment, and new consoles with individual temperature control and adjustable desk height, to help with ergonomic health and comfort during long shifts.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer told reporter Connie Tran that the remodel cost two-million dollars, which was funded out of the State's emergency communications funds.

Emergency services dispatcher Kathy DeBorde, a veteran of 26 years on the job, said the newly remodeled center is going to make the life of a dispatcher much easier. The 85 dispatchers employed by Fresno PD answer approximately 3,000 emergency and non-emergency calls a day. “Now we come to work and it just seems like it's more calm,” said DeBorde. “It's clean, it's efficient."

Dyer said the two-million dollar project had been in the works for about a year. It's highly technical, with advanced telephone equipment and an upgraded electrical system. "Which will no doubt greatly enhance the service that we provide to our citizens as a result of the increased efficiency," said Dyer.

Dyer said one of the new features also includes state of the art mapping technology, stating, “Even if a caller calls in and does not know the locations in which they're at… our dispatchers will be able to most likely identify not only where they're at, but where they're travelling.”

The upgrade was contracted to Intrado, a subsidiary of West Corporation.

And by the way - FPD is now hiring Emergency Services Dispatchers. For details, click here (closing date is July 24).
