Operation Destination Disaster Showcases MARTA Police Department's Emergency Preparedness
The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid transit authority (MARTA) Police Department enacted its annual simulated full-scale training exercise on Sunday, Sept. 13 at the MARTA Station at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Operation Destination Disaster (D2) was designed to evaluate emergency response capabilities in the event of an actual threat to the system.
This year’s exercise simulated a hostage situation (with injuries and fatalities) aboard a train and on the station platform. Over the course of the three-hour simulation, MARTA officers and other law enforcement personnel reacted to the situation as if it were happening live.
The training exercise provided the opportunity for MARTA PD, staff, and other emergency response agencies to address simulated incidents, such as terrorist attacks, pandemics or natural disasters in a real-life setting.
The Federal Transit Authority and the Department of Homeland Security require that transit agencies of MARTA’s size conduct these exercises to assess plans and response capabilities.
