Nine Years Of 9-1-1 Coming Of Age

Date: 2012-03-07

The NG9-1-1 Institutee recently marked the 9th Anniversary of its NG9-1-1 Caucus.  The NG9-1-1 Institute is a  not for profit organization that supports the mission of the Congressional Next Generation 9-1-1 Caucus.

The recent approval of the NG 9-1-1 Advancement Act will help foster the migration to NG 9-1-1 services and marks a “coming of age” for 9-1-1 services at the national level.  The Congressional NG 9-1-1 Caucus is leading the migration to NG 9-1-1 services which will allow Americans to communicate with 9-1-1 using voice, text, photos, and live video from mobile devices.

Nine years ago today, February 25th, the Congressional E9-1-1 Caucus was established by Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL), Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA), Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT) and Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) to educate lawmakers, constituents and communities about the importance of citizen-activated emergency response systems. Congressman Shimkus and Congresswoman Eshoo still serve as co-chairs of the NG9-1-1 Caucus and are joined by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Richard Burr (R-NC).

Congressman Shimkus stated “As the original author of cellular 9-1-1 legislation, it is an honor to continue my involvement with Next Gen 9-1-1.  I am proud that we have maintained a bipartisan, bicameral approach to this issue and have been successful this year in getting the initial funding for NG 9-1-1.”

Congresswoman Eshoo stated “Nine years ago, together with Rep. Shimkus and former Senators Hillary Clinton and Conrad Burns, we came together to form the Congressional E-911 Caucus with the simple goal of educating our colleagues on 9-1-1 related issues. We’ve made significant progress since then, including last week’s passage of the Next Generation 9–1–1 Advancement Act of 2012. The future looks bright as we prepare for the next generation of 9-1-1 services that will enable the delivery of voice, text, photos, video, and other data to 9-1-1 call centers across the country, and the American people will be the beneficiaries.”

The NG9-1-1 Caucus is the only bi-partisan, bi-cameral organization dedicated exclusively to 9-1-1 and emergency communications issues, dedicated to educating lawmakers, constituents, and communities about the importance of citizen activated emergency response systems.

  • A national coordination office has been established to serve as the official “home” for 9-1-1 issues within the federal government;
  • $43.5 million in federal grants have been distributed to advance E9-1-1 services;
  • VoIP services now provide E9-1-1 services; and
  • Another $115 million in federal grants have been approved to advance the migration to NG 9-1-1 services has been approved.

Gregory L. Rohde, Executive Director of the NG 9-1-1 Institute, said: “The Congressional NG 9-1-1 Caucus has brought 9-1-1 to the forefront of national emergency service policy.  The Caucus, especially the Co-Chairs, is a model of bi-partisan cooperation, demonstrating how national leadership can make a difference in local communities.  America is safer because of the NG 9-1-1 Caucus leadership.”
