Paris attack prompts push for 'Text-to-911' ability in NYC

From a story by Amber Jamieson in the New York Post

New York City Councilman Mark Levine (D-Manhattan) said that the video of survivors hiding in a Paris café while an armed terrorist seeks victims to shoot highlighted the value of text-to-911 technology.  During a terror attack in NYC, Levine said that the ability to silently text 9-1-1 could save lives and help direct responders to the threatened victim’s location.

“Being able to text police and say, ‘I’m hidden in a certain cafe . . . please send help,’ without alerting the terrorist to their location could save their life,” Levine told the New York Post in a story posted online yesterday.

Levine is the co-sponsor of a bill submitted last August proposing the implementation of an updated 9-1-1 system that would allow people to send text messages to emergency dispatchers.  The “Next-Generation 9-1-1” system would be invaluable in coordinating responses to terrorist attacks like that in Paris and elsewhere earlier this month.
