blueHula Studios updates Response Deck SBC for iPhone and iPad
An Exemplary Emergency Notification App Created by Local Fire Captain
“Response Deck is providing Santa Barbara County responders the information they need to respond to emergencies in a way never before done on a mobile device,” said Craig VanderZwaag, Response Deck’s developer. “We’re putting critical information in the hands of emergency responders, giving them the tools they need to respond more efficiently and easily.”
Response Deck provides a real-time dispatch feed from the Santa Barbara County Emergency Communications Center and will alert users of a call based on station or incident type. “As a company officer and paramedic having critical information in the palm of your hand is important,” said VanderZwaag. “Response Deck is putting that information on the iPhones and iPad’s of first responders and the feedback has been tremendous.”
Response Deck also gives users access to local paramedic protocols, hospital location and contact information and a number of other agency specific resources.
While Response Deck was initially targeted for emergency responders, the local community has taken interest in the app and fire incident notifications. VanderZwaag initially thought the app would be used by 50-100 people. “We’re now delivering close to 200,000 push notifications to more than 1500 users per month. Clearly the app is used heavily by both emergency responders and the community at large.”
“I cannot say enough about what Craig has provided for County Fire,” said Santa Barbara County Fire Division Chief Eric Peterson. “We all use the app. In the past when we heard a callout, we’d all run for our radios. Now, all we need to do is take out our phones.”
The product was developed for Santa Barbara County, but blueHula hopes to see the product expand into other agencies as well. "We are working now with three other jurisdictions to implement this for their dispatch centers," VanderZwaag told 9-1-1 Magazine. "We're actively seeking other agencies as the technology that is behind this is really quite simple and cost effective."
