Industry Council Issues Statement in Support of NENA i3

The Industry Council for Emergency Response Technologies (iCERT or Industry Council) has announced the Association’s support for i3, the Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) standard developed by the National Emergency Number Association (NENA).

Standards form the building blocks for product development by establishing consistent protocols that can be universally understood and adopted. This helps foster compatibility and interoperability, while streamlining product development and time-to-market.

Standards for 9-1-1 systems are driven by public safety’s needs and the competitive marketplace, and as such, will necessarily evolve to satisfy new requirements.  iCERT believes it is imperative that stakeholders work collaboratively within the i3 standards development process to address these changing requirements rather than introducing competing standards.

“Re-engineering technological solutions that are far into the development cycle at this point,” stated George Rice, Executive Director of the Industry Council, “would not only be costly to both industry and public agencies, it would delay the implementation of NG9-1-1 nationwide by the year 2020, which is the goal adopted by the NG9-1-1 Now Coalition.”

Through the use of standards, explicit requirements for technological solutions in a given field can be verified and their efficacy assured. Doing so in the context of public safety is one of the more crucial applications of a standards process, and i3 has provided the field of emergency calling a platform for development and deployment for more than a decade.
