Icom Two-in-One Radio/Pager Meets Narrowbanding Mandate, Features Popular Fire/EMS Paging Tone

Icom America, leading manufacturer in radio equipment and systems for public safety agencies, addresses the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) narrowbanding mandate with its F50V series portable radio. The compact and robust radio operates at 12.5 kHz efficiency to comply with the FCC requirement effective January 1, 2013. Suitable for volunteer fire departments, EMS units and related agencies, the F50V can be programmed with the popular paging tone found in devices operating 25 kHz-wide channels.

"The F50V portable has always been a popular choice among firefighters and will continue to be a viable option well after the FCC's deadline," says Icom America National Land Mobile Sales Manager Joe Collica. "The F50V is rugged and reliable: it survives the physical demands of firefighting while satisfying public safety's legal obligation to migrate to 12.5 kHz technology by January 1, 2013."

Icom's F50V is an economical choice for volunteer fire departments, offering paging and talk-back capabilities in a single device. Practical features for the first responder community include powerful vibration alerts, 700mW loud audio output and an 8-character LCD. Voice recording and storage (8-minute maximum) and a lone worker function for remote check-in are also available. Popular signalings such as CTCSS, DTCS, 2-Tone, 5-Tone and MDC 1200 compatibility are included. The portable series meets MIL-STD 810 military specifications and receives an IP67 rating, providing dust-tight protection and up to one meter of water submersion for 30 minutes.

Volunteer fire and EMS can migrate to 12.5 kHz bandwidth while maintaining the features that were popular with old, non-compliant models. The paging tone that is found in wideband devices and commonly used by firefighters and EMS staff is programmable in the narrowband-compliant F50V series. Agencies currently operating the F50V series will need to download a firmware update to program the familiar paging function.
